Third workshop on technologies to mitigate methane in pasture-based livestock farming

Published at: 16 July 2025

We developed a workshop on technologies to mitigate methane emissions in grazing livestock, strengthening capacities with strategic partners, and promoting sustainable health and nutrition practices.

AGROSAVIA's El Nus Research Center led the workshop "Technologies to Reduce Methane Emissions in Livestock Farming," a space for technical exchange and dialogue with strategic stakeholders in the national livestock sector. This activity was developed within the framework of the FONTAGRO project "Innovations to Reduce Methane Emissions in Ruminants," which seeks to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity in tropical bovine systems by 10%. This project is funded by the Government of New Zealand as part of its contribution to the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA). It is implemented by AGROSAVIA in Colombia and INTA in Argentina, with support from the Universidad de los Andes (Colombia) and the National University of Córdoba (Argentina).

The event brought together 43 participants, with a notable participation of women (48.8%) among producers, technicians, researchers and representatives of entities such as the Regional Committee of Cattle Ranchers of Puerto Berrío - COREGAN, the University of Antioquia-UDEA, the Colombian Federation of Cattle Ranchers - FEDEGAN and the National Learning Service - SENA, committed to the sustainable transformation of the livestock sector in the region. It is worth noting that FEDEGAN and SENA expressed their support for the project from its formulation stage, through letters of support.

During the event, key project advances were shared and key topics addressed, such as:

Sustainable grazing-based nutrition strategies.

Use of methane-mitigating feed additives.

The role of animal health in livestock sustainability.

Implementation of perception assessment tools for mitigation technologies.

Participants completed a survey promoted by GRA, aimed at assessing the current status of enteric methane-mitigating feed additives implementation in the industry and the future perception of using this technology in local livestock farms.

This is the third workshop in a series of regional activities that seek to bring scientific knowledge to the local communities and promote the adoption of innovative technologies for more sustainable livestock farming in grazing systems in Latin America and the Caribbean.
