Activities in the Nehuen Co Community: Inter-sowing of mallín and review of small ruminants for service

Published at: 20 May 2025

On April 30, a workshop was held at the Innovation Unit of the Painemal family establishment, located in the Nehuen Co. community.

The main objective was to intercrop mallín and inspect small ruminants prior to breeding. Community authorities, students from the Secondary Education Center No. 26 in Ingeniero Jacobacci, and INTA technicians participated, strengthening the collaborative work between the community, students, and specialists.

This activity was carried out as planned by the Newen Có Community, which prioritized technologies related to forage production within this innovation unit. The sowing training was led by Engineer Javier Ferrari, from INTA's Bariloche Agricultural Experimental Station. During the training, a demonstration was conducted on interseeding mallín with a mixture of grass and legume seeds, complemented by the application of pelleted fertilizers to improve soil fertility and promote pasture development.

At the same time, a survey was conducted to systematize the baseline for animal production. This included recording live weight, dental chronology, body condition, and identification of the main genetic defects in the Merino (sheep) and Angora (goat) breeds. All animals present were covered: 16 sheep and 95 goats, which provided accurate data to guide improvements in reproductive and nutritional management practices.

The activities carried out during the day allowed for progress in the adoption of technologies prioritized by the Community and strengthened the interdisciplinary team, consolidating ties between producers, students, and technicians to promote sustainable development adapted to local needs.
