Participation in the XX FONTAGRO Annual Technical Monitoring Workshop: Connecting Science, Technology, and Agriculture

Published at: 01 July 2025

This time, we are one of the finalist projects. The event brings together strategic projects in agricultural science, technology, and innovation from Latin America and the Caribbean.

From today until July 3, the XX Annual Technical Monitoring Workshop of FONTAGRO Projects is taking place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Researchers Mónica Andrea Botero Londoño and Julián Mauricio Botero Londoño will present the progress of the project: “Nanofertilizers in the soil and nitrous oxide emissions.”

This project, under execution since 2022 and currently in its final phase, has demonstrated the potential of nanoparticles (zeolite, TiO?, and ZnO) to increase nutrient use efficiency, improve the productivity of forage crops, and reduce pollutant emissions such as nitrous oxide.

Project development has been made possible thanks to the financial support of FONTAGRO and the strategic partnership between the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS, Colombia) and the Universidad Técnica de Manabí (UTM, Ecuador). The UIS team led the synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles and the trials conducted at its Málaga campus, while the Parque Tecnológico de Guatiguará provided the equipment (AFM, XRD, XPS) and technical support to ensure the quality of the zeolite, TiO?, and ZnO nanoparticles. UTM carried out spectral and phytotoxicity analyses in Ecuador, including the implementation of drone flights in experimental fields.

Local development was strengthened through collaboration with producers from the Sociedad de Agricultores de Santander (SAS) – Colombia and the Asociación de Moradores San Lorenzo de Mapasingue (ASOMOSLOM) – Ecuador, who enabled the execution of field trials, facilitating the application of technologies under real-world conditions and generating robust data on biomass, nitrogen uptake, and vegetation cover recovery.

The team from Colombia and Ecuador is proud to contribute to this international knowledge network, promoting technological solutions to address the challenges of agriculture in Latin America.
